What Is Spravato®?

Medication management is a collaborative process that involves:

Spravato® is a prescription nasal spray that contains esketamine, a form of ketamine. It is used in combination with an oral antidepressant and is administered under the supervision of a certified healthcare provider in a medical setting.

Unlike most antidepressants that take weeks to take effect, Spravato® works on different brain receptors and may provide rapid relief from symptoms of depression—sometimes within hours or days.

Who is a Spravato Candidate?

Spravato® is approved for adults with:

  • Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD):
    You’ve tried at least two different antidepressant medications without success.
  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) with Suicidal Ideation or Behavior:
    You are experiencing severe depressive symptoms and need rapid intervention.

Please note, a thorough psychiatric evaluation is required to determine if Spravato® is the right fit for your condition and overall health. We will provide this to all patients prior to beginning treatment.

What Are the Side Effects?

Common side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Disassociation 
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Sleepiness or sedation

 These effects usually wear off shortly after treatment, and you’ll be monitored throughout the process

How Does the Treatment Work?

  • In-Clinic Administration

    Spravato® is self-administered as a nasal spray, but only in a certified clinic under provider supervision.

    You’ll be monitored on-site for about 2 hours after each session to ensure your safety and observe any side effects.

  • Treatment Schedule

    • Weeks 1–4: Two treatments per week
    • Weeks 5–8: One treatment per week
    • Week 9 and onward: Maintenance treatments as needed

SPRAVATO® is a nasal spray treatment containing esketamine, approved for adults with major depressive disorder who have not responded adequately to at least two prior antidepressant treatments (treatment-resistant depression). It is administered under direct supervision in a certified clinic setting.

Adults whose depression has not improved with at least two other antidepressant medications are typically considered for SPRAVATO®. The treatment is provided in a clinic that is certified under the REMS program.

SPRAVATO® is given as a nasal spray in a clinic. Patients remain under observation for a period after dosing due to potential side-effects. Typical treatment schedules involve twice-weekly administration in an initial phase, followed by weekly or biweekly dosing in a maintenance phase.

Some patients report improvement in depressive symptoms within hours to days of their first dose. Because of its rapid-acting mechanism, SPRAVATO® offers hope when other treatments have failed.

Common side-effects include dizziness, dissociation (a sense of detachment), increased blood pressure, nausea, sedation, and changes in perception. Because of these effects, patients must be monitored for a period after administration.

SPRAVATO® is FDA-approved and many insurance plans provide coverage for it when criteria are met (such as prior treatment failures). It represents a different class of treatment targeting the brain’s glutamate system instead of the traditional serotonin/​norepinephrine pathways.
